Classic Dump Cake on white plate

Classic Dump Cake

A classic dump cake is a simple dessert recipe that is made by dumping cans of cherry pie filling into a baking dish, topping it with a box of dry cake mix and butter. The result is an ultra moist, fruity, and slightly crumbly cake that’s impossible to resist.

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch Baking Dish
  • Spatula
  • Microwave Safe Cup

Ingredients

  • 1 21 oz can Cherry Pie Filling
  • 1 20 oz can Crushed Pineapple* with juice (or 15 oz)
  • 1 15.25 oz box Yellow Cake Mix (or white)
  • 1 cup Butter divided in half (2 sticks)
  • ½ cup Chopped Nuts (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Add the cherry pie filling to the bottom of the baking dish, using a spatula to spread it out.
  • Pour the crushed pineapple with the juice evenly on top of the cherry pie filling. Use a spatula to spread it out.
  • Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over top the crushed pineapple.
  • If using chopped nuts, sprinkle them over the top.
  • Melt ½ cup (1 stick) of the butter and pour evenly over the top of the cake mix. It won't be too even, but that's okay.
  • Slice the remaining ½ cup of butter into small slices. Place the pieces of butter on the top of the cake mix, evenly distributed.
  • Bake for about 35-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  • Let cool to warm and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

*The average cans of pineapple seem to most often come in 15 oz and 20 oz size. Both have worked for me.
