Oven Baked Country Style Ribs

You may not have thought that you could make tender, flavorful ribs in the oven, but you sure can! And they are wonderful!

I first started making country style ribs in the ’80s. We never ate them growing up.

The first time I made them we were in shock at how tender, easy and yummy they turned out.

What Are Country Style Ribs?

These ribs are actually cut from the blade end of the loin close to the pork shoulder. The bones are not from the ribs, but are actually pieces of the scapula.

You can buy the bone-in or boneless. I usually go for boneless.

The meat can be used for other recipes such as pork carnitas, pozole, chili verde, pulled pork, and so on.

The steps to make these delicious oven baked ribs are easy. Here they are:

Barbecue Sauce

My recommendation is to use a smoky flavored barbecue sauce for a more “grilled” flavor.

As I always say though, use what you have, and one that you know you like.

Seasoning the Ribs

It is important to flavor these country style ribs in three layers.
• First, coat in a flavorful spice rub that has salt, cumin, pepper, chili powder, and other spices.
• Second, after the initial bake time, you will coat the ribs in a smoky barbecue sauce. This makes them taste amazing!
• Third, after baking, brush with the remaining barbecue sauce right before serving.

Made this last night and, let me say, the dry rub was absolutely amazing! I should have stopped there. I used a sugar free bbq sauce and, while my son liked it, I didn’t like it at all. I will absolutely use the best quality bbq sauce I can find next time. The ribs deserve it!

I’m making this tonight. They’re in the oven right now 4 they’re 1st hour. We were in SUCH a hurry & I hadn’t read the instructions thoroughly. So I didn’t make a ‘rub’ per se. I sprinkled the spices just on the topside. We’re using the Sweet Baby Ray’s B-B-Q sauce. I’m SO GLAD it got a rave review! I’ll post how mine turn out……. can’t WAIT!

Great recipe when it’s too cold to BBQor you are too lazy/busy to stoke a fire. If you have a covered roasting pan you definitely should use it for this.

I halved the rub( I had less ribs). Shorter cooking time, added 1 tbsp red wine vinegar to the pan with the water. So Good, didn’t even use BBQ sauce. Thanks for the recipe

I made this recipe today for dinner. I made it pretty much exactly as the recipe was written. I baked the ribs 3 hours, and used Sweet Baby Rays on them the last hour. My husband loved them! I made creamy cole slaw and it was the perfect side dish for these ribs!

Tender, moist and juicy and very flavorful. The spice rub made the difference. The pork butt boneless country ribs were cooked in my Nesco roaster. The rack was placed in the bottom of the roaster pan covered by heavy aluminum foil. 3 1/2 lbs. just fit nicely in there aided by cutting the ribs in half as suggested. I topped the ribs with another piece of aluminum foil loosely covering the meat. All the timings and temperature worked as per the recipe. This is a keeper.

After removing the liquid and brushing with BBQ sauce, you can flip them and brush with more BBQ sauce and continue baking.

This is my first time cooking pork ribs or pork anything because of my mom’s blood pressure concerns. So I wasn’t sure how to cook them and how long to cook them. The recipe really helped. My mother loves pork so I wanted to surprise her. She was getting tired of my chicken and fish. Now I just need to figure out what is best to serve with them., something healthy but tasty.?

A healthy side dish for pork is baked yams. White potatoes are starchy but yams, are not. I bake mine in the microwave or you can just bake them for an hour in the oven with the ribs. Add a salad or a healthy veggie and you’ve got a yummy meal.

So I haven’t made any type of ribs since my early 20’s. I don’t like spare ribs so I thought let’s bake. I got some country style that were not too fatty and found your recipe. Loved the idea of the rub. I tweaked it a bit since I did not have 3-4 lbs of meat .. approx 1-2 lbs just enough for two people. So I made it .. loved it . Easy and fab.. I suggest anyone who was boneless tender .. bbq in an oven to try it .. ty for the recipe

The Rub is excellent. I used it mostly as written with the exception of using 1 1/2 TBs of Dark brown sugar instead of just 1 T. Then used a scant half teaspoon of red pepper flakes instead of cayennne.. For the BBQ sauce I used Heinz Kansas City Sweet and Smoky. I usually use Sweet Baby Rays, BUT this one worked better in this recipe. One tip. If your ribs are fairky fork tender, BUT not falling apart DO not add that extra 30 min mentioned after “if not tender add 39 more min and the top w/ BBQ. Next time I will just Drain all the liquid (There was ALOT) The coat well with sauce And bake 20 to 30 min max more.

I absolutely recommend using a 9×13 pan or slightly larger. NOT a rimmed sheet pan. Too much liquid comes off for that.
This rub is excellent. If you like more smoky heat you can add 1/2 t. Chipotle chili powder & a 1/2 t dry mustard to the rub mix.
