Slow Cooker Sour Cream Onion Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are one of the best side dishes! There are so many ways to flavor them to compliment your meal. Today's recipe has a nice onion vibe.

I wouldn't say that these mashed potatoes taste like sour cream & onion potato chips, but the general flavor does lean that way. Though much less salty!

What I like about this crock pot mashed potatoes recipe is that I can set them up and walk away and get stuff done. No need to watch a boiling pot.

Which Slow Cooker Should I Get?

  • In my opinion, from having used many slow cookers over the years, a programmable slow cooker is the best option.
  • You can set the time in smaller increments than 1 hour. So if the chicken takes 2.5 hours, you can program for that amount of time.
  • If you set your food to cook for 4 hours and need to leave to run an errand, what happens if you are late getting back? The food may burn or be overcooked.
  • If your slow cooker has a "Keep Warm" setting that automatically kicks on after the cook time has ended, You can come back to food that isn't burned.
  • Could it still overcook? Yes, depending on what you have in there and how late you are getting back. But it won't be nearly as bad as if it was left on either the High or Low cook setting!

Great Programmable Slow Cookers

The steps to make Slow Cooker Sour Cream and Onion Mashed Potatoes are so easy:

Potatoes in a crock
Add the potatoes, onion, garlic, and some salt to the crock. Cover with water and cook until the potatoes are tender.

Then drain them and add back into the crock.

Potatoes in a crock with butter
Add some butter and the seasonings and mash up the potatoes with a potato masher (if using a masher, remove the garlic if you can find it as it will be in large pieces).

You can use a hand mixer if you like a smoother consistency.

mashed potatoes in a crock with sour cream
Add the sour cream and mix it in well.

This is a good time to take a taste and adjust the salt or other seasonings before the next step.

Slow Cooker Sour Cream Onion Mashed Potatoes
Add the green onion and the chives to the crock and stir in. You can use more or less to your taste.

Serve hot with your meal. Add some extra butter, or a little milk if you like your mashed potatoes creamier.
