Kool-Aid Dyed Easter Eggs are a fun, safe, and easy way to bring a little extra color to your Easter celebration. This is a great alternative way to color Easter eggs! You only need a few simple ingredients, things most households already have on hand, and you're ready to make vibrant colored Easter eggs!
Alternative Easter Egg Dye
We love finding new ways to color our Easter eggs. One of our favorites is our Tie Dye Easter Eggs method.
If you don't want to use those color tab Easter Egg dyeing kits from the store, you can make Kool-aid egg dye from Kool-Aid packets!
All it takes is hard-cooked eggs, packets of unsweetened Kool-Aid, boiling water, vinegar, paper towels and spoons.
Why Make Kool-Aid Eggs
• The Eggs come out with vibrant colors.
• You don't need the dye tablets, just one packet of kool-aid per color.
• You probably already have the ingredients and materials on hand.
• It's an easy way to get a variety of colors for your eggs.
Materials to Make Easter Eggs Dyed with Kool-Aid
You'll need the following materials:
Hard-Boiled Eggs – Cooled and dry.
Unsweetened Kool-Aid drink mix – 1 Packet per color desired.
Boiling Tap Water
Cups – that can handle boiling water safely.
White Vinegar
Paper Towels
Spoons or Tongs
How to Make Kool-Aid Dyed Easter Eggs
1) Pour boiling water into a heat-safe cup.
2) Add in a packet of the Koolaid and stir it to dissolve.
3) Add white vinegar, and stir.
4) Repeat this process with however many colors you decided to use.
5) Carefully, lower an egg in each cup of the dye mixture (1 per cup).
• Let it soak for 1-2 minutes, or until the egg has reached your desired color. For more vibrant Easter eggs, let it sit longer. For paler, more pastel colors, remove them sooner.
6) Using a slotted spoon, remove the egg and carefully place it on a paper towel. Try not to let the egg roll around or touch the egg as you'll start to mess with the dye on it.
7) Leave the egg to sit and dry for 5 minutes, or until it's no longer wet and then you can place it back in the egg carton.
What Kool-Aid Flavors should I use?
The options are fun because different flavors make different shades of color, grab whatever flavors of Kool-Aid you like and have fun!
Some of our favorite ones are Tropical Punch, Black Cherry, Green Apple (comes out the same color as Lemon Lime- so don't use both), Pink Lemonade, and Berry Blue. If you want a light orange, use Peach Mango. If you want a spring yellow, try Pina-Pinepple.
They all produce vibrant colors, but I'm sure whatever flavor you choose for your Kool-Aid Easter Eggs will be the envy of the Easter egg hunt!
The only flavor we don't recommend is regular lemonade. It was very pale, no matter how long we left the egg in.
How Should I Hard-Boil My Eggs?
-
Whatever method you normally use to boil your eggs will work for this Easter activity. If you're not sure, try my method:
- Start by placing them in a pot of cold water, covering them by at least an inch. Bring the water to a rolling boil, then remove from heat and let the eggs stand in the hot water for 10-12 minutes.
- After the eggs have cooked, immediately transfer them to an ice bath to stop the cooking process.
- Dye the eggs. Peel under cool water when ready to eat them.
To Hard Boil Eggs:
Easter Egg Dyeing Tips and Variations
- If you don't have spoons, you can use tongs. Just be sure you have a good grasp on the egg without cracking it or dropping it as you add or remove it from the Kool-Aid dye glass.
- You don't want to add more vinegar than what is suggested for each of the Koolaid packets.
- Don't add more water or the dyeing power of the KoolAid dye will decrease. If you add more water, you need to add more Kool-Aid powder.
- Some colors will require a little longer soak time. Specifically the Pink Lemonade. We suggest waiting 3-4 minutes for a gorgeous colored egg.
- You can use farm fresh eggs, brown eggs, or regular white eggs. The color will come out a little darker on the brown eggs, but will still be pretty.
- You can dip eggs in additional containers to create multi-color designs.
- Wearing disposable gloves will help keep your hands clean during this fun activity.
- Be sure to let your eggs sit and dry, or you'll mess up the dye on the shell.
- Keep in mind that as the egg dries, the color will brighten up a bit.
This is an Easter activity that both kids and adults will enjoy doing together as they get ready for their holiday festivities. Happy Easter everyone!
